Mary Workman had just opened the Sapna station Sunday morning, when a man came in, and asked for a carton of cigarettes. “I asked is there anything else Ican get you, and he reaches inside his jacket and starts to pull out a gun, and says everything in the register,” she explains.
Workman did what she is trained to do, and gave him the cash.
“It's Ingrained into your head if you're working at a place like this, you do what your told and get them out of here. You don’t risk your life for a little bit of money.”
The Sapna robbery was one in a series of crimes police say are connected.
Three other stores were robbed at gunpoint within days.
Tuesday, police arrested the man they say is responsible.
James Lancaster was nabbed after a short chase.
Police say he has confessed to more crimes including robbing a dozen Elkhart homes and businesses, other robberies in Elkhart and St. Joe counties. And some in Michigan.
Police told NewsCenter 16 their good fortune continued Friday when they made five more robbery related arrests in separate cases.
Darrell Ashley and three minors were arrested for holding up the Speedway station early this morning.
While this afternoon, Marvin Harris was taken into custody, charged with robbing the Elkhart Community Bank just hours earlier.
Police say good tips got them their suspects.
Police say the arrest of James Lancaster has solved 25 cases just inside Elkhart City limits.
He is held on a $110,000.00 bond.
