The Erskine Village area of South Bend has a new addition to accommodate shoppers; A super Wal-Mart opened Friday.
The superstore opened its doors at 7:30AM Friday morning to a processional and ribbon cutting.
What makes this store different is that it is eco-friendly.
The lighting system shuts off when the sun is out, taking advantage of the skylights.
And the floor is solid slabs, avoiding the chemicals used with tile flooring.
For those who live near the south side, it is a welcomed addition.
South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke stated, “I think the south side now with this strong anchor compliments downtown and we'll see some additional developments along Michigan Street.”
Wal-Mart’s store manager, Scott Ruoff, added "We're just real excited about the fact that we're getting this open. We've had a lot of people wanting us to open a store on the south side of south bend and they're real thrilled about the fact that we're finally opening one down here."
The site also takes advantage of its previous property.
It is built on a former landfill.
