Indiana Cracks Down on Illegal Workers

Thursday, lawmakers discussed cracking down on illegal immigration.

House bill 1253 would require all Indiana employers to verify the citizenship of their workers.

Businesses who hire illegal workers could face civil action.

"Illegal alien households are estimated to cost $2700 a year more than they pay in taxes, so if you multiply 2700 times 85,000, you're talking around $250 million a year that it's costing the state," explains Rep. Vern Ticher Riley.

"The bill actually creates a picnic for lawyers, it creates confusion and loopholes that result in making this bill simply a feel good bill," says Rep. Mike Murphy, Indianapolis.

The bill passed out of committee eight to three.

It now moves onto the full house for consideration.
