South Bend Police found the bodies of two men at the bottom of a ten foot deep manhole.
The bodies were found behind Coveleski Stadium, where the railroad tracks cross the Taylor Street viaduct.
Police still aren’t in a position to say if the deaths were accidental, or the result of foul play.
Officers do say, there are certain assumptions they make whenever someone is found in an underground utility vault.
Investigators were drawn to the vault this morning after taking a missing persons report involving three people from the Center for the Homeless.
The missing persons were described as being “scrappers.”
According to Captain Phil Trent of the South Bend Police,
“just by total chance they (the officers) opened the manhole lid, to look down inside and they discovered what at this point is two bodies at the base of this manhole.”
Police encountered a similar situation in September, when a man was shocked while allegedly foraging for scrap in an underground tunnel.
That man actually survived a shock from a 72-hundred volt power line.
