If you hit a deer with your car, will your insurance company foot the bill? You better double check.
Every year, there are more than a half million deer-car accidents in the United States.
Michigan and Pennsylvania lead the nation in the crashes.
Nationwide, damage to vehicles is estimated at one billion dollars.
But, most collision insurance does not cover colliding with a deer.
Experts say comprehensive coverage not collision is what you need.
But, millions of drivers drop their comprehensive coverage to save money or if they drive an older car.
"It clearly states that under the comprehensive portion you are covered for things like a collision with an animal such as a deer," explains Jeanne Salvatore, Insurance Information Institute. "You want to be a safe driver and be very careful, if you live or drive in an area where there's a lot of deer and you want to make sure what's covered in your insurance policy."
Also keep in mind, winter causes more crashes because deer are migrating and mating.
