Rumble in Roseland!

Late this afternoon, a Roseland squad car took Councilman David Snyder to the St. Joe county jail after what is now being dubbed "The Rumble in Roseland."

“They came out with David in handcuffs and hauled him in,"
said Council President Charley Shields…. for allegedly assaulting new Roseland council member Ted Penn inside the town hall.

Penn is an outspoken critic of David Snyder and wife, Dorothy, whom he replaced on the council.

Shields, an ally of Penn, arrived shortly after the incident. “I saw blood at the corner of his mouth and he said feel my head, feel the back of head. I didn't but he had a lump on the back of his head.”

“Ted Penn started it all,” said Dorothy.

But she says the wrong person was taken to jail.

She says it started after Penn ran out of his office and started yelling at Redevelopment Commission employee K.C. Pocious. “My husband went to get in between them and said you can't yell at this man. Ted Penn started pushing him and hitting. There were fisticuffs exchanged. Ted Penn fell down.”

“I'm in pain, I'm going to be real bad tomorrow,” Penn said, after being released from Memorials E.R. Friday night. He did not want to talk, but his daughter did.

She said her father told her Snyder and his father, the Reverend Russell Snyder, came after Penn. “With rage in their eyes and started beating him for no reason at all, they were throwing him all around the Town Hall. They had his head. They grabbed a hold is his head and started banging it on the wall. They got him down on the floor. They were kicking him, stomping him, broke some of his teeth out in his mouth.”

About the time Penn left the hospital, David Snyder walked out of the jail with Dorothy who had bailed him out.

“The man is absolutely mad,” David Snyder said. He claims he was attacked by Penn. “I was shoved, I got my balance back. I stood up, this is after he grabbed my shirt, he stepped back and shoved me again and I found myself on the floor with Ted Penn laying on top of me.

“Did you at any point strike Ted Penn?” we asked.

“I did not strike Ted Penn,” David replied.

And while Ted Penn heads home from the ER, Dorothy Snyder may be taking his place. “I injured my knee in the scuffle so I think we need to go home. I might have to go to the hospital,” she said.
