The number of homicides recorded in St. Joseph County in 2006 was close to a record low.
There were 15-homicides last year. That’s one more than the record low of "14” recorded in 2004, and nearly half the record high of “29” recorded in 1995.
2006 also marks the fourth year in a row that the number of homicides has been held under 20: something that’s only happened a total of six times since 1993.
St. Joseph County Prosecutor Michael Dvorak says he’d like to take credit for the low homicide rate, but he can’t.
But Dvorak will take credit for securing convictions in the vast majority of the killings.
Of the 15 homicides of 2006, only three are considered unsolved.
