A local group is working hard to honor another of America’s former leaders.
The Martin Luther King Foundation of Saint Joseph County is busy preparing to honor the civil rights leader, whose birthday is next week.
Thursday, members of the foundation met to brief the community on upcoming events.
The Century Center in downtown South Bend will host an awards ceremony that will be followed by speeches and scholarship presentations.
Gladys Muhammad of the Heritage Foundation said, “That's the great part about this celebration is that people are coming and working together and they believe in the principle of non violent social change and they believe in justice and equality.”
Organizers say Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only a national event, but a community event.
The federal holiday takes place on January 15th.
