FTC Fines Four Marketers of Weight Loss Pills

The Federal Trade Commission is fining four marketers of weight loss pills.

The FTC Commissioner says claims by Xenadrine EFX, One A Day Weight Smart, Cortaslim and Trimspa were not supported by science.

Those marketers claim the pills provide rapid weight loss and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, Alzheimer's and even cancer.

The products have not been banned from store shelves, but the companies will have to stop making the claims.

"What we challenge is the marketing of the claims. The marketers are required to back up the claims with the science and if they can't do that they can't make the claim. But we don't ban the products from the shelves," explains Deborah Platt Majoras.

The FTC has yet to specify how much each marketer is being fined.
