Iraqi American Reaction to Hanging

Iraqi Americans from Michiana are reacting to Hussein execution.

One man with family still in Iraq says Hussein's hanging will only lead to more problems while others say Iraqis can now truly be free.

In fact many Iraqi Americans are relieved. They say it’s the end of an era.

South Bend resident Khalil Azar plans to add another chapter to his book American Foreign Policy And Its Link To Terrorism In The Middle East with this latest current event as proof.

“He was in American custody. He shouldn't be killed. He should be put in jail because of the crimes he committed but should not be killed,” says Azar.

He believes this killing was unjust and will only lead to more violence maybe in retaliation.

“I am against all killing period. We want to end it period. We want to have peace and peace doesn't come with airplane and missiles,” he added.

But for the Al-Shawis the two brothers say the violence can't be any worse than the violence they saw first hand while living in Iraq years ago.

They saw people killed first hand when they spoke out against Saddam in their homeland of Iraq.

“You know this is the end of the dictator, how he… he will kill... and how much he killed.. he can't do nothing,” says Iraqi American Yassin Al-Shawi.

“I said I don’t like Saddam and they put me like 40 days in the jail… and they hurt me,” says Iraqi American Ali Al-Shawi after his arm was broken during a jail sentence.

But the big question remains what will happen next with Hussein no longer in the picture?

The Al-Shawis believe Hussein's death will lead to even more freedom in Iraq but Azar sees only more problems.

“He is the only leader who united Iraq, look at Iraq… America should rejoice cause of what happened in Iraq,” says Azar.

Friday night the Al-Shawis stayed up all night watching the coverage of the execution.

They say ever since Hussein lost power in Iraq they are not afraid to go back and visit family.

In fact they'll fly back in February.
