After days of speculation, and for some, years of waiting, Saddam Hussein has been killed.
Iraqi officials have confirmed to NBC News that Saddam Hussein was executed shortly after 10:00pm EDT by hanging.
This was in a secluded location, somewhere outside the secure "Green" or International Zone where Saddam had been held in a high security U.S. military prison.
Now, it was not the public execution some here had wanted, some inside the Prime Minister's government had wanted, instead there were just seven participants, including government representatives, a couple of witnesses, in fact victims of Saddam Hussein's crimes, a doctor to confirm his death and a Muslim cleric in case he had any words.
In the streets of Baghdad the reaction has been relatively calm... there has been some celebratory gunfire in Shia areas of Baghdad.
But there hasn't been any angry demonstrations yet, which was the main concern of U.S. and Iraqi forces, worried that Sunni anger would spill out into the streets... but U.S. forces are concerned and they are keeping a close watch in the highest state of alert.
