Guilty, but mentally ill: That was the plea Friday from the teen accused of slashing students with a machete at Valparaiso High School in November 2004.
James Lewerke entered the guilty plea to eight felony charges in Porter County court Friday.
The 17-year-old faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in February.
The attacks happened on the day before Thanksgiving in 2004, at the beginning of Spanish class.
Seven students were cut or hurt by Lewerke before administrators stopped him.
The case was moved to adult court, and delayed by two psychological evaluations.
Lewerke has been living with his grandparents in Iowa.
