Homeowners Offer Perks To Potential Buyers

It has been a slow year for home sales across the country, and that means some sellers have to get creative.

Just fixing things up is not cutting it with some buyers anymore.

Sellers are resorting to some pretty unusual and creative measures to get their houses off the market.

“How would you like to live here?” Reporter Debra Bogstie asks. “This 4000 square foot Burlington home comes with great views and even an elevator. It's been on the market just about a year, but so far no sale.”

Homeowner Bob Laria says, "We had an idea it was going to take this long."

He has dropped the price.

Now he is revving up the deal by throwing in this 1967 Pontiac GTO. "Obviously this is a challenging market, so it's not coming off that we're that crazy, but at the same time because of the uniqueness of the house and car. You get a lot of oohs and aahs," he explains.

With houses staying on the market a bit longer these days, more and more owners are throwing incentives, like this car, in order to get buyers in the door.

Realtors Jeannette Punsoni and Cynthia Burke, known as team tall girls, have successfully used incentives before, even hosting an art show to sell a Hartford home. "It just provides a little bit of an interest for people to come and take a look at it," Jeannette explains.

"We're in what we call a period of recovery," Norm Krayem of the Connecticut Association of Realtors says. He says it is more common for buyers to pay closing costs or offer early move in deals than a car. "It has to stall a little bit, and that's just supply and demand. Prices have gone up, interest rates have gone up. The amount of buyers are now sitting on the sidelines."

In a slower market, the Laraia's hope their wheels speed them to a sale very soon.
