New Research on Balance Training and the Elderly

A new type of balance training may go a long way to keep older people from falling down.

The balance training used in a University of Michigan study included speed and direction exercises.

Participants practiced changing speed and direction when walking and stepping over small obstacles.

Compared with Tai Chi, which uses slower movements, these study participants made more improvements in mobility.

Now, researchers are trying to find out whether the exercises could help older people avoid falls.
