Kwanzaa Begins

Tuesday marks the first day of Kwanzaa.

The seven day holiday was founded by Doctor Ron Karenga in 1966 for African-Americans to reflect on ancestry and culture.

It involves seven daily principles of unity, self-determination, work and responsibility, economic strength, purpose, creativity and faith.

Gifts are traditionally given between parents and children on the last day, which is January 1st.

Kwanzaa is a Swahili word, which means first fruit.
