On Strike on Christmas

On strike… on Christmas!

That’s what some Elkhart workers will be doing this holiday.

For nine months, negotiations have been going on between Conn-Selmer and the union but so far, there's been no agreement.

Workers on strike at Elkhart's Conn-Selmer plant are getting a reminder of what Christmas is really about this year.

“Christmas is not about the mall, it’s not about the mall and sure there are a lot of things we would like to buy… but we have learned to adapt and we are doing fine,” says union worker Rick Shireman.

This year a little less than 200 striking Conn-Selmer workers will spend part of their holiday inside a heated hut.

And no doubt for many of the families Christmas will have a different meaning this year.

“Its still family time… whether you have money or not... you are still spending time with your kids,” says union worker Mark Jellison.

The strike started back in April when the union turned the down the first of four contract offers.

The last offer was supposedly the company's “last, best and final.”

But recently the union gave a proposal to the company so another vote could take place in the future.

Under union rules workers can strike for a year.

After that, the company can decide to close out the union and end any negotiations.

In the meantime to help out this holiday the region three U.A. W. representing Indiana and Kentucky donated 49 thousand dollars to help out.

The money will be divided equally among the 200 some people on strike.
