UPDATE: Man arrested in connection with 5-year-old's shooting

Police say around 9:15 p.m. Sunday night 5-year-old Damaris McGee was shot in the 500 block of Chapman Avenue at the Washington Gardens apartment complex.

The boy was transported to Elkhart General Hospital before being airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. He is currently listed in critical condition.

Neighbors say they little boy was shot in the head, although police can't confirm that. They say he was shaking and bleeding heavily before the ambulance arrived.

Police arrested 26-year-old Brian Grant Monday morning in connection with the shooting. They got word he was in the 300 block of Jefferson Boulevard in Elkhart and arrested him wihtout incident. He's being held on a charge of Criminal Recklessness with Serious Bodily Injury. That's a Class C felony.

Neighbors say Grant is the boy's uncle.

Police are still are still investigating. They don't whether or not the shooting was accidental. Neighbors tell NewsCenter 16 Grant had been drinking before the incident; police won't say whether that had anything to do with the shooting.
