49th anniversary of Studebaker factory closing
Forty-nine years ago today Studebaker announced it was closing up shop and shutting down its South Bend factory.
The company was founded in South Bend back in 1852, originally producing wagons until entering the automotive business in 1902. In the wake of the South Bend plant’s closure on December 9th, 1963, 5,000 workers were left out work.
At its peak, Studebaker employed more than 20,000 people. Once the South Bend factory closed it was only a matter of years before the company ended production all together.
