I-STEP Scores are Down for Immigrant Hoosiers

According to state officials the I-STEP scores of immigrant Hoosiers are down.
All students are required to take the exam regardless of their ability to speak English.
Approximately 45 percent of immigrant third graders passed the reading section of the I-STEP plus in September.
Officials say that is down from 52 percent two years ago and other grades also were down.
In the past, immigrant students have had three years to learn English as a second language before taking the tests.
This year that was not the case.
Federal education officials rejected alternate tests for those students in Indiana and 17 other states.
