LaPorte Votes Down Immigration Proposal

The LaPorte City Council voted against a proposal Wednesday that would allow police to search for and detain illegal immigrants.

Critics say it could have led to racial profiling.

LaPorte's police chief says enforcing the ordinance would strain her already understaffed 43 member department.

The ordinance would have also created a hotline LaPorte residents could call to report suspected illegal alien activity.
