Divorce is never easy, especially during the holidays.
However, there are things parents can do to avoid stressful situations.
When parents are divorced, Psychologist Nadine Kaslow says they need to put their children first.
Kaslow recommends talking about holiday arrangements ahead of time, and resist the urge to tackle long-standing family problems.
Instead, step-families can create new traditions that will give meaning to the holidays.
“Rituals that are well done give everybody a role in them from the youngest child to the oldest adult so that everybody has an important part to play,” explains Kaslow.
Kaslow says making plans that are respectful and realistic will help relieve some of the stress that can come from divorce.
