If you turn to alcohol to relieve stress during the holidays there is some good news.
The brain can repair some of the damage caused by heavy drinking.
Researchers studied the brains of 15 alcoholics who stayed sober for at least 38 days.
They performed MRI scans before and after the study and found staying sober caused brain volume to increase by two percent.
Chemicals that indicate how well brain nerve cells are functioning also rose significantly. Participants performed better on tests after the study.
