Coast Guard Fire Practice Cancelled

The Coast Guard is withdrawing plans for live machine-gun firing exercises along the Great Lakes.

Critics called the program unsafe and disruptive.

Environmentalists were worried about lead bullets and the effect they would have on the Great Lakes.

The Coast Guard says live-fire practice is an essential part of weapons training.

They say the Great Lakes plan was designed to create test zones and schedules that would have minimal effect on the environment and boat traffic.
