If you have not started up your fireplace, you might get a chance soon.

Be careful though.

While some worry it could be a fire hazard, it could also be a hazard to your wallet.

Experts say make sure you check out your chimney sweep before you hand over your hard-earned money.

Dan Cross of Chimney Sweep stated, "The first thing they would do is go up on top, which the older person can't do, and they would break a flue tile and come down and show them the damage and say we can fix it now for a set price, but if we come back it will be twice as much."

Here are some general tips:

  • Most chimney sweeps who have been in business do not go door to door or solicit business over the phone.

  • Get estimates in writing. If a price sounds too good to be true, most likely it is.

  • Make sure your chimney sweep is certified by the Chimney Sweep Safety Institute of America.
