In the heart of Indiana Amish country lies a down-home mom and pop eatery. This is Lone Star BBQ in Shipshewana. This is not Midwestern BBQ...this is the real, authentic thing.

Don Harper and his wife haven't been here long (only a few months) but are more than happy to bring up a little taste of Texas. However, if it's ribs you’re fixing to get, you better mosey on to somewhere else.

“I've never cooked a rib in my life and not going to start learning,” says Don. “You stick with what you're good at...and that is brisket.”

Once the choice piece of meat is selected, a secret rub is sprinkled on then it's into the cooker. Don uses a combo of mesquite and hickory wood to smoke the meat; something you can smell the minute you walk in the door.

After we prepped the meat, it takes 12 hours to smoke. So we waited, and waited, and waited until it's mouth-watering tender. But it's not just brisket; Don also smokes turkeys, sausage, and pork tenderloin

Since a dry rub is used, no BBQ sauce is added. However, Don has his own bottled brand for sale. The meat is cut and prepared right in front of you and the sides are added. Most meals are under $8 and you're getting more than great food for the price….the experience of real Texas BBQ.
