Christmas Lights May Leave a Hole in Your Wallet

Extravagant light displays can help add some cheer to the holidays.

With energy prices soaring higher than Santa’s sleigh those lights could burn a hole in your pocketbook.

So what can you do to save money?

Experts suggest using new light-emitting diode, or LED lights.

They cost a bit more about $12 a strand, but will save you over the long run.

"People decorate their houses and they make them beautiful and they glow with lights and they don't realize that their energy bill is going to go up, sometimes fairly significantly," explains Kateri Callahan, alliance to save energy. "If you put up ten strands of LEDs versus conventional lights, you're gonna save about $174 in your energy bills. So, the more lights you put up, the greater your energy savings."

Another plus the new LED lights last for years, giving you old-fashioned Christmas cheer, without the sticker shock.
