Lottery Privatized?

The odds appear good that Governor Mitch Daniels will soon unveil a proposal to privatize the Indiana Lottery.

Some state lawmakers say they were recently briefed on such a plan.

Included in the group was Senator Robert Meeks ® from LaGrange, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.

While Meeks supported the toll road lease, he's not convinced that the idea of privatizing the lottery is a winner: “The lottery is not operating at a loss it's making 200-million dollars. And you have the State of Indiana’s credibility on the line. If there's any dishonesty or anything like that, the State has to be in a position to correct those things.”

It's anticipated that the state would receive a lump sum payment in exchange for handing control of the lottery to a private firm.

Sources say the proceeds would be used to fund higher education.

The Governor is expected to announce the details of his plan at a news conference scheduled for Thursday morning.
