Bank Robbery in South Bend

Some scary moments in South Bend Wednesday morning, after a man claiming to have a bomb robs a bank.

It happened around 10:00 a.m. at the Keybank branch in the 2800 block of Lincolnway West.

The suspect is described as a black man in his 40s.

When police got there, they found a small black box in the bank's lobby.

The building was evacuated and a portion of Lincolnway sealed off.

The South Bend Police Bomb Squad then took over.

"They moved the device outside the bank by using a bomb robot, then they used what's called a disrupting device which essentially shoots a shot of water at the device and breaks it up so they can have a look inside of it," explains Capt. Phil Trent, South Bend Police.

Fortunately there was no bomb; police found a video game controller inside the box.

The suspect left the bank in an older, white, four-door Buick.

Witnesses say the passenger side of the car has paint on it from an exploded die pack.

If your recognize the suspect, or have any information, you are asked to call South Bend Police.
