New Debit Cards Instead of Unemployment Checks

After a delay, Indiana state officials are ready to roll out the debit cards that will replace weekly unemployment checks.

Next week, state officials expect to start distributing the first of the Visa debit cards.

The new cards will be sent to about 20 percent of the more than 35,000 Indiana residents collecting unemployment payments.

The state had planned to have the debit cards in use by spring 2006, but the decision to award the contract to Dallas-based affiliated computer services took longer than planned.
