Elkhart police are looking into a severe case of possible "shaken baby syndrome" that killed a nweborn baby.
The baby's father was arrested on Friday for neglect after he called 911 for help.
Elkhart police say the baby died on Saturday afternoon at South Bend's Memorial Hospital.
Meanwhile, his father is in Elkhart County jail as prosecutors look into additional charges.
Police say on Thursday 21 year old Carlos Ortiz called 911 because his six week old baby boy wasn't breathing.
After examining the baby at the hospital doctors say the baby's brain was bleeding severely and he was facing other injuries after a lack of oxygen.
Ortiz was arrested Friday afternoon for neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury.
“I can tell you that it was after his interview that he was arrested,” Wargo said.
Neighbors and friends living above Ortiz say they saw him call for help
They say he's a responsible father and are surprised he could be accused of the crime.
“I was upstairs sitting upstairs when all this happened watching TV he runs up the stairs grabbed the cell phone and runs back downstairs. I didn't know what was happening. I called my own people in the house and went downstairs and I saw the baby was choking, “ said neighbor Aaron Johnson.
“He just said a couple of days ago I don't want to be nothing like my father… I want to be there for my kids and stuff.. but a couple of days later he goes to jail… don't make any sense, “ added another friend.
Police say the baby's mother was at work when the father called for an ambulance.
The couple has two other daughters. They are in protective services' custody during this investigation.
