The full Senate is expected to vote to confirm Robert Gates as the country's newest Defense Secretary.
Gates spent much of Tuesday testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
That group eventually voted unanimously to recommend him to replace outgoing Secretary Donald Rumsfield.
Gates has said he will speak candidly to the President about what needs to be done in the war in Iraq.
Few lawmakers objected to approving Gates who was Director of the CIA under the first President Bush.
