A gas station clerk is hospitalized after being shot during a robbery tonight. It happened at the Marathon station on State Road 933 and Auten Road in Clay Township. According to his family the victim is a relative of Preet Singh, the grocery store owner who was killed during a robbery west of downtown South Bend last December. Tonight's victim is 64-year-old Barkat Singh. Police say he was shot in the leg by a man who stole money from the station just after 8 p.m.
Singh was taken to Memorial Hospital. Family members say he'd been working at that service station for less than a year. Police are speaking to witnesses hoping they can come up with a description of the suspect. “The suspect is a black man who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and has a small build,” explains Jamiee Thirion, Public Information Officer for the St. Joseph County Police.
Police are not sure if the robber fled on foot or got away in a vehicle. If you have information you are urged to call police
