A local man is honored for his more than 50 years of service to the community.
Thursday, at the Charles Martin Youth Center, the city of South Bend honored Joseph Luten with the F. Jay Nimtz award.
Joseph Luten was chosen because of his long and varied volunteer activities.
As a long time resident of South Bend, he has a stellar track record.
He is noted for his work in the school system and with the YMCA.
He has also served on numerous community boards and has served for a mentor for underachieving students.
Mayor Stephen Luecke stated, "He continues to give to this community and make it a better place to live please help me join in welcoming and thanking joseph luten."
Nmitz award winner, Joseph Luten, said "Of all the honors and all the mayors and governors and places I have been, this place here means more to me than I can think of."
Nimtz was a former congressman, known for his commitment to the South Bend community.
