IUSB’s new pedestrian bridge was officially dedicated Friday.
The Army Corps of Engineers, South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke and State Representative Jackie Walorski all participated in Friday’s ceremony.
The 600 foot bridge spans from the former Playland Park to the Schurz Library.
It is been part of IUSB’s master plan since 1989.
Officials say the bridge symbolizes future growth of the university and the surrounding area.
"IU South Bend is such a great anchor for the city and really such a great asset, providing students that enter the workforce, opportunity for existing workers to come back and improve their skills and this is just a great vision for this campus as it moves forward," explains South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke.
The bridge cost $2.7 million to build and was primarily funded by federal grants.
It will eventually connect the IUSB campus with student housing, which is in the process of getting approved.
