If you aren't already using the technology, chances are you know someone who is. We're talking about text messaging. It's become especially popular among teens and young adults these days.
In addition to emails and voicemails, text messaging is another option in the world of instant communication. Most cell phones these days have the text option and with literally billions of the messages being sent and received , wireless companies are turning quite a profit.
We asked people what they think of the text message.
The text, a short message from someone, minus the conversation.
“Probably text 20 times or more a day,” says Notre Dame student Joshua Bartrom.
“I've been text messaging since I've been 8 years old,” adds Yuichi Uda.
A text can take a few seconds or few minutes and doesn't require a voice or a computer. “It's a very convenient way to send info, especially in movie theaters, libraries, that kind of thing,” says Brent Canfield, a salesperson for South Bend’s U.S. Cellular.
Some texters we caught up with even use it for work. “Since I travel so much with business, it's important to know that the client is ready for me, do they have additional questions, do I need to know some additional information?” asks Lisa Watson.
Despite it's growing use and popularity, some people have mixed feelings about the text message. “I used the text but not anymore, I find it extremely impersonal and very irritating,” says Joe Wheeler.
“I find it frustrating because I can't say all that I want to say in a text message and I’m not very quick at it,” adds Tesia Zientek.
While some say it's not as personal as other ways of communicating, many agree it's good to have another option in getting in touch with friends and family. “Sometimes if I'm bored and I send a text to cheer up somone’s day, and it's fun to get those sometimes too,” says Bartrom.
“You learn things and you never want to stop learning and this is one of the things,” adds Wheeler.
If you're thinking about joining the text craze, here's a couple of tips: Check with your wireless company on the cost. It can be pricey depending on how many you send and if whether you have a text package.
Also, be careful where you text. There have been several serious car accidents caused after people were texting while driving.
