Twelve-Year-Old Child Appears in Court to Face Criminal Charges

A northern Indiana girl accused of trying to kill her mother made her first court appearance Wednesday morning.

Escorted by police and her face covered with a hood, the 12-year-old went before a Miami County judge to face arson and attempted murder charges.

Prosecutors say the girl set her mother's bed on fire, and then left their home with her brother and sister.

At first, the 12-year-old told police she and her siblings had been abducted, but later they discovered she had taken the children and left their mother for dead.

"She’s a 12-year-old girl that is mixed up in something here that I don't think anyone understands at this point. She's very upset," explains Defense Attorney D.J. Bolinger.

The 12-year-old has to undergo counseling from a court appointed advocate.

She will remain in a Kokomo detention facility until her next court appearance in December.
