It's probably safe to say that most people in Michiana are enjoying the unusually mild November temperatures! So what does this warm weather mean for local businesses that operate outdoors?
From the ski hill to lawn and landscape workers, warm temperatures this time of year can be good or bad depending on the line of work. After talking to a couple of local businesses, the general consensus is most folks are taking advantage of this warm weather streak. They know it won't last forever.
Although businesses like Swiss Valley Ski Hill depend on the cold and snow, it's still early enough in the season that they don't need it quite yet.
“The lack of snow hasn't bothered us yet this year. The warm weather has allowed us to finish some projects. Happy to finish snowmaking improvements and lighting improvements, allowed us to do some things we might not have had time for,” says Swiss Valley Ski’s Manager, Jamie Stafne.
Despite the warmer temperatures, officials at Swiss Valley hope to have thier ski hill covered with snow by the same time next week. “Hopefully it will break here at the end of the week and we'll be able to start making snow and be open by the middle of next week,” adds Stafne.
Meantime, lawn workers with South Bend's Foegley Landscape are soaking up the warm weather. “This year we've been able to do a much more thorough cleanup, going into the winter, everybody like their properties to look good, so we've been able to spend more time, more details on properties, picking up leaves and doing a final cleanup and making them look really nice,” says Foegley Landscape’s Brian Hominiuk.
But the reality is, these guys know their days are numbered. They'll soon be turning a leaf-blower in for a snowplow! “The trucks are ready, all the plows are ready, prepped and ready, we just need to put them on,” adds Hominiuk.
Despite these warm temps, the folks at Swiss Valley Ski Hill hope that once it gets cold, it stays cold. They need consistent temperatures for all the snow they're making.
Meantime, you might want to get outside while you can. From the forecast, it’ll be a drastic change in temperature by the end of the week.
