While it may be one of the busiest shopping days of the year gift givers aren't the only ones looking for a steal.
Ever year police say thieves steal packages out of a shopper’s car.
“You can see right into the car. It would be pretty easy for somebody to take what they want out of the vehicle,” says one shopper who puts her bags in her trunk.
But not everyone follows the same idea.
“It has become a nationwide epidemic because people leave things in their car and they feel that it is safe. It makes it very easy for a thief to get in out and cars for an easy steal,” says Corporal Aaron Cassel.
Especially around the holidays when shoppers hop from store to store but don't bother hide their purchases.
“People get very lax about their car because maybe it hasn't been broken into. But what if it happened to them? It only takes one time. Car larcenies are opportunists who look for a car that is unlocked or look for something they want in the back seat,” says Cassel.
Police warn shoppers to keep their belongings close, be aware of their surroundings, and to lock their doors.
Otherwise a cart full of purchases could end up in the wrong hands!
“I'm really paranoid about that kind of thing because I think people will look in and I think that if they see it at least if its in your trunk they are less likely to know,” agreed one shopper.
Police say believe it or not many people leave their packages in plain view in the car and also cash, CDs, and their I-pods.
So it’s important to keep those items at home!
