Michigan Students Receive a Special Visit

A group of southwest Michigan third graders got a first hand lesson in government at school Tuesday.

Congressman Fred Upton visited with students at E.P. Clarke Elementary School in St. Joseph.

He told kids there what he has to do as part of his job.

Upton told them he makes school visits so hopefully they will want to get involved in the political process when they get older.

“I grew up in St. Joe and one of the things that I do is that I visit a school every week. Now why is that?” explains Upton. “When I went to elementary school, I went to Lincoln and I went to Brown here in St. Joe. I never, ever had an elected official come visit my class.”

Congressman Upton also talked about the visitors he's welcomed to his office; including astronauts, the Vice President and hundreds of people from the Michigan area.
