Semi Catches Fire At Elkhart's KIK Plant

A large explosion sparks a fire on the South Side of Elkhart Wednesday Night.

It happened around 7 o'clock on Middlebury Street.

Police say a semi-trailer, parked at the dock of KIK custom products, blew-up and caught fire.

Kik is located on the site of the former Accra-Pac.

It is now one of the nation's largest custom manufacturers of consumer products including household cleaners and aerosols.
“The aerosol cans contained in the truck were going off. The pops you here was the cans,” said Capt. Tim Balyeat of the Elkhart Police Department.

Police say workers at the plant were not in danger.

One person suffered scrapes and bruises in the explosion and fire.

That person was taken to a local hospital for observation.
