There has been a string of recent robberies at Family Dollar stores in South Bend!
Family Dollar customers on Edison Rd. in South Bend were shocked to find the convenience store closed Saturday afternoon.
“I think it’s an outrage. I love this store, it has a lot of bargains!” said Kenosha Harvey.
“The first thing I say is, ‘Somebody robbed you?’” one customer asked.
A sign on the door explains it all.
The sign said due to a recent staff shortage and the recent robberies at gunpoint at area Family Dollar Stores, it was unsafe to keep the store open.
One family dollar employee spoke with us anonymously about the robberies.
He says nothing is being done by the company to increase security or keep the employees safe.
“I was robbed at gunpoint here at Family Dollar and I called my district manager and tell him what happened and all he can say to me is, How much money did they get?”
There have been at least five robberies at South Bend Family Dollar stores since August. Many other Family Dollar workers have similar stories.
Elisha Emmans was robbed within her first two weeks on the job. “The eighth day I was here that ex-employee came in and he had his friend with him.”
Employees say with the holidays coming up they hope the company does something soon.
“Like I said we have no security. There are no cameras… nothing,” Elisha says.
“I'm not going to stop shopping here. I just hope they boost up security” another customer said.
The security department at Family Dollar’s corporate office could not comment on the robberies.
They could only refer Newscenter 16 to the public relations department which can issue a statement on Monday.
