Elkhart Residents Smash Pumpkins for Recycling

Some Elkhart residents had a smashing good time today, all in the name of recycling.

America recycles day is November 15th, but Saturday afternoon, the Elkhart Environmental Center celebrated early by hosting a Trash Bash and Pumpkin smash.

Residents were treated to a puppet show, crafts, games and music, all while learning about recycling.

The main event was the pumpkin smash.

People were encouraged to smash the gourds, and put them in a compost pile.

“It's always better to put it in a compost pile, because if you put your pumpkin in a landfill it just sits there. And it doesn't decompose right and it just adds to the landfill. And if you compost it, then you can actually use it in a garden when you're done,” explains Kelly Mielke, event organizer.
