Kids Kicking in Excitement in a Niles Competition

Saturday, hundreds of people turned out for the 16th annual Universal Taekwondo Habgido Gumdo Cup in Niles.

Dozens of boys and girls participated in Saturday’s competition.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art characterized by fast, high, and spinning kicks.

The sport is mostly known as a form of self-defense, but is also good for exercise, entertainment and its philosophy

“In the classes there are all different belt levels and all different ages. So, the younger ones get help and confidence from older students and older students get experience in teaching and instructing,” explains Dr. Trevor Neal, Taekwondo instructor.

Some events at the competition included board breaking and Taekwondo sparring.

If you are wondering, loosely translated, Taekwondo means, the way of the foot and fist.
