"Spirit of America" Flag

Although we all know the American flag represents freedom... sometimes we forget what our veterans have done to preserve that freedom.

That's why a Mishawaka man designed a flag to remind us.

Two flags wave outside of Dale Hemphill's house in Mishawaka.

One called Old Glory, and another designed to complement it.

“It's a real tribute to Old Glory. So many of us don't know enough of our flag, Old Glory, and this is a tribute to Old Glory at the same time,” Hemphill says.

He designed the flag, called "Spirit of America" and he's been dreaming up the design since 1979.

He served in the navy for 6 years and is a truly a patriotic American. Driving around in a flag covered van.

“Well I believe in our country, I believe in freedom, I believe in our veterans,” he says. “Everybody has a dream and this is my dream.”

With the detailed decoration, the flag serves as a history lesson in itself.

“I've had people say I didn't know we were in so many wars. Well you start out with the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, US-Mexican War, then the Spanish-American War.

Hemphill's given flags to people all over the world, from actress Bo Derek, to both President Bushes.

But he says its ultimately a gift to all of the veterans.

“When you look at the American flag you see freedom, but you don't know all the wars we've been in. This shows what Old Glory has been through and veterans been though all these years.”

The flag not only lists all of the wars America has been in, but also, there are two markings on it to remember the victims of 9-11 and the World Trade Center.

NewsCenter 16 asked Dale, "What happens if the US goes to another war in the future?"

He said he'll just have to re-design the flag, again.
