Bad Day for the GOP

Chris Chocola was one of three Republican incumbent congressmen from Indiana to lose on Tuesday; the same goes for Hostettler and Sodrel.

The Democrats also picked up four seats in the State House of Representatives, to become the majority party there.

Congressman Chris Chocola said, “It was a rough day for Republicans from the top of the ticket to the bottom, whether they sought to help run the country, or the county.”

Andy Kostielney lost the St. Joseph County Council seat that had been in Republican hands for 19-years. “If you had an ‘R’ next to your name, it was going to be a bad day,” he said. “I'm just shocked at some of the raw numbers on the Democratic side that were just totally foreign to any projection that had happened there in 10 or 15 years.”

That left a host of Republicans trying to figure out why it happened.

“I think it's a lot of things,” says Chocola. “I think it's the war, some of the local issues; what we're seeing across the country there are cycles to things, and I think we're in a cycle.”

“Whew! At 8:30 tonight, 100 percent of the precincts are in: I have won the race,” said reelected St. Joseph County Commissioner Mark Dobson.

Dobson was one of the survivors. He won his race by 429-votes, but nearly lost his composure. “I've gotta’ be the most blessed guy in this room,” he said Tuesday night.

While the title of the most blessed gal might go to fellow survivor, State Representative Jackie Walorski. “A ‘W’ is a ‘w’. I can tell you,
Charlie Weis said a win is a win and we won,” she said. “My heart is still beating about 150-miles an hour. I don't even know if I can sleep tonight. It was such a nail biter. I knew t would be, everyone up here knew it would be.”

Despite some tense moments, Walorski ended up winning her race by about 1000 votes. Although, she did so after being outpolled in her home county of St. Joseph.

Tuesday night, Walorski captured 53-percent of the vote, down from 64-percent in the 2004 election.
