A drive into South Bend may soon offer a new and improved view!

South Bend city officials announced plans on Wednesday for the Portage Avenue corridor.

The corridor will be part of the city's gateway program. It will serve as one of the five paths into town.

The Portage Avenue steering committee wants to develop under-utilized areas, like the 800 block of Portage, and give the city greener space.

The city is working with local businesses to tear down the block's current buildings.

South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke says "I know that there is concern sometimes, about the city tearing buildings down. Again, as someone who is an old renovation person, I prefer to save buildings if we can. But sometimes, the economic reality of the situation is that these buildings have served their useful life."

Officials say new housing will replace the green space in the next few years.
