A Mishawaka teenager shared her personal story with NewsCenter 16 about her struggle to lose about 100 pounds, and now she’s being offered a helping hand because of her courage.
It's almost summer and people are struggling now more than ever to lose weight, but 13 year-old Michelle Gonzalez has been trying for years.
As we told you, her dad's recent scare with diabetes was her wake up call to change her life.
Getting outdoors everyday is a promise Michelle made to herself as she plans to spend the summer trying to shed about 100 pounds.
We interrupted her family soccer game to tell her some good news we just learned. She now has an official plan thanks to ICE Athletic Center.
General Manager Doug Kelly says, “We feel we can definitely help her reach her goal of losing weight.”
Trainers were impressed with her willingness to tell everyone she's overweight and she doesn't want her life cut short, or others in the same position.
So, ICE offered their help.
We told Michelle, “They are right there watching you. How do you feel about that?” She said, “I'm so excited, seriously when I go to the gym, I have no clue what I'm doing and I think I'm doing it all wrong.”
Kelly says, “It's usually a long process to lose it for the long term, so we're going to start her off slow, two times a week with personal training, get her used to the machines and develop a program specialized for her with weight training and the cardiovascular aspect, also a nutrition program.”
Michelle says, “Thank you for this opportunity, I'm really happy.”
Kelly says, “I know she's going be up for the challenge. She could lose a substantial amount of weight in a six month period of time. It depends on the effort put forth by her as well.”
Michelle says, “It's going to be hard I know for sure. I think I can do it.”
Kelly says, “We're hoping to teach her so she can do that and hopefully teach others while she's doing it.”
Michelle says, “My sister, I think she's going to get on the bigger side, so I think it should be a wake up call for her.”
Michelle says she’s ready to start as early as next week. NewsCenter 16 will be monitoring her progress.
