A Michiana truck driver got some big smiles as he showed off his big rig today!
Mrs. Dubois’ 4th grade class from Holy Family Elementary School
is involved in a unique program called "Trucker Buddy International."
Students are paired up with local truck driver Mike Dombrowski.
They write him letters and Dombrowski sends postcards back to the class from his travels across the U.S.
Dubois says the program gives kids great letter writing practice and helps them learn about different places around the nation.
"He's sent us postcards from Arizona, California, Texas and last year he sent quite a few from New England!"
Dombrowski says he keeps about six postcards in his truck at all times to write to the class when he has a free moment.
"I don't know how to explain it, but just watching the kids when I pulled up today, it's almost like you feel like Santa Claus! The kids are exicted. They can't wait and it gives you a new meaning on life. You drive out there every other day and you think that you're just an old truck driver but the kids really appreciate it. they go home and tell their parents. Like I said this is my second year so some of the feedback that I got from the last class was just tremendous. I love it. It gives me a sense of pride and I feel good about what I'm doing!"
DuBois learned about the Trucker Buddy International program while flipping through a teacher’s magazine.
