The swine flu has reached Michiana.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security says a student at the University of Notre Dame had the confirmed case.
Notre Dame says the student has fully recovered since becoming ill last week. After sending a sample to the Indiana Department of Health, "The University was informed on April 24 that the sample was atypical for Influenza A, which could indicate that it was swine flu. The culture was then sent to the CDC in Atlanta for confirmation. The University and the health department were in constant communication until confirmation was determined today (Tuesday)," Dennis Brown wrote in a release on the University's website Tuesday.
"We want the public to know they should be concerned, but not alarmed,” said Indiana Health Commissioner Judy Monroe, M.D. "Follow all normal precautions to avoid the flu, including hand washing and covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough. Also, please stay home from work or school if you're sick."
Dr. Rebecca Moskwinski with Notre Dame University Health Services says there are no plans to cancel any classes or events because of the confirmed swine flu case.
Health officials say they’re continuing to investigate whether the student may have traveled overseas, or even off campus, before coming down with the flu. Officials would release very little personal information about the student, not even confirming whether they were male or female.
Meantime, they say the infected person more or less went through their daily routine as a student while they had the flu over the last week, seeing as they weren’t aware it was an uncommon strain. It is likely they came into contact with other students, however, there have been no other confirmed cases at this point.
School and county health officials say they’ll be working with state and federal authorities as they investigate the case, and test for other cases in the future.
They say the student is separated from others as of Tuesday, as they may still be slightly contagious. However, they’re growing near the 7-day period where the disease can spread, since the symptoms originated around April 22nd. They say the student recovered using only over the counter medication, not a prescription or others drugs known to combat the swine flu.
Dozens of swine flu cases have been diagnosed across the country. A U.S. health official says at least five people are hospitalized with swine flu in the United States, and deaths are likely. "I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," said Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control.
Besser says the hospitalizations include three in California and two in Texas. He says the country has 64 confirmed cases across five states, with 45 in New York, one in Ohio, two in Kansas, six in Texas and 10 in California. At least four other cases have been reported by states, including the case at Notre Dame.
