It caused a lot of commotion in St. Joseph, Michigan earlier this month.

Now, two weeks after police shot and killed a runaway buffalo, the scare continues.

The FBI is now involved. Specific area police and their families are being threatened. Police say so are students to a lesser extent.

The threats are made in a letter sent from Bedford Park, Illinois. The letter was typed and unsigned. Copies were also mailed to the Herald Palladium, Cornerstone Alliance, and the Berrien Artists Guild.

The buffalo escaped from a Benton Township farm on Saturday, April 4th. Police spent all day chasing it out of traffic. The buffalo ran into a neighborhood, hitting a car and a house, spooking a herd of deer, and even causing an accident. Police say they had no choice but to shoot.

St. Joseph, Michigan’s Superintendent of Schools, Al Skibbe says since Monday the schools have had extra security on hand. It's because police say the letter indirectly threatens students. It twice mentions, "12 shots fired into a St. Joseph, Michigan school."

Skibbe says, “The parents have been very supportive. I sure did get some questions and calls for clarification and we were happy to answer those questions and our attendance remained high, so the parents trust us and I think we gave them the information we had and we're doing what we need to do in being prudent in this situation.”

Skibbe says the parents were told about the letter Sunday night. The school sent a recorded message to district parents. There are 2,850 students in the district. Skibbe says when kids are involved it's important to be very cautious.
